Josie Mintun, June 25, 1915 – June 1, 2009

Memorial Tribute to Louise Caroline Mintun (née Clarkson) with still photos. Those familiar with the Del Mintun family will recognize the house at 25 Hazel Road in Berkeley. In the background of the 1953 Pontiac station wagon, one can see the Hotel Claremont, symbol and sentimental heart of the Claremont district, near the Oakland border. In the car are Dennis, Bonnie, Peter and Martha. Mrs. Mintun played a part in community affairs ever since arriving from Lacolle, Québec in 1945. The Mintuns’ house was built in 1949 on a vacant lot sold by JT Ward Realty on Domingo Avenue. Del Mintun (1918-2001) was doctor to the Ward family before the Wards moved to Los Angeles to devote their time to Rocky and his Friends and The Bullwinkle Show. The house was situated at the south end of the John Muir School playground, where flying balls would often invade the Mintuns’ back yard. In the 1950s and ’60s, Josie Mintun volunteered to do the repairs on the red sweaters of the Berkeley Junior Traffic Police. In addition to the family and friend photos, several of the photos show the Wednesday volunteers of the Alta Bates Showcase, the College Avenue thrift store that benefits the Hospital’s famous Burn Center. This video was modified from the original one made by Bonnie Mintun to show at Josie’s memorial service, held July 17, 2009 in Sonoma. The video opens with a recording Josie wanted played at her service, and it ends with a band playing the national anthem of her native Canada. The
