Mr. & Mrs. ’55 is a 1955 Bollywood film by director Guru Dutt. Guru Dutt stars alongside Madhubala , supported by Lalita Pawar, Johnny Walker and Jagdeep in this socially-critical romantic comedy set in contemporary Bombay. The films music is by OP Nayyar and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri Preetam (Guru Dutt), a struggling cartoonist, meets Anita (Madhubala) at a tennis match, where she is watching her favorite tennis star. Anita, a wealthy and westernized heiress is controlled by her feminist aunt, Sita Devi (Lalita Pawar). Sita is suspicious of men, and cultivates her attitudes in Anita. However, to receive her fortune, her father’s will decrees that Anita must marry within one month of turning 21. Sita Devi doesn’t agree with this, and tries to set Anita up with a sham marriage which will soon lead to divorce, thereby giving her both freedom and a fortune. Sita hires Preetam to marry Anita, but doesn’t know that the pair have already met. Preetam is kept from Anita after their marriage, but he kidnaps her and takes her to the traditional house of his brother. His attorneys also allege the two spent 2 1/2 weeks in France this summer and billed the team for the trip. The libretto was written by the experienced team of Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinsky, leading Soviet humorists of the day. The satirical plot dealt with a topical theme geared to one of the most pressing concerns of urban Russians, the chronic housing shortages and the difficulties of securing livable conditions. Cheryomushki translates to bird-cherry trees and the operetta was named after a real housing estate in southwest Moscow. The work was completed in 1958 and received its premiere on 24 January 1959 at the Mayakovsky Operetta Theatre under Grigori Stolyarov. The operetta is reminiscent of Shostakovichs popular music of the period, yet at the same time it engages a satirical assessment of the housing redevelopments in Moscow. In a musical career which spans half a century, Shostakovich engrossed himself with a staggeringly diverse range of genres and styles.
