Kenneth M. Henderson 1954-2004 George has a terrible nightmare connected to his apocalyptic fears; in the dream he is visited by a mysterious woman in a turquoise dress whom he seems to know. Ruth meets George’s daughter, Maggie, and is pleased to find that Maggie and George share a close relationship. Human League began in the late 1970s as the brainchild of two computer operators, Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware, from Sheffield, England. They tried a number of names including the Dead Daughters and the Future until settling upon the Human League after former hospital porter, Philip Oakey, joined the group. Adrian Wright joined shortly thereafter to prepare slide shows for projection during the group’s live performances. The first single, Being Boiled, was released in 1978, but the group did not make the charts in the UK until the release of Holiday 80 in the spring of 1980. As a result the Human League’s second album Travelogue made the UK Top 20. By 1980 the Human League began to feel strain between the pop music favored by Philip Oakey and Adrian Wright and the more austere electronic sounds favored by Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware. In October 1980 the group split in half. Ware and Marsh left to begin a project called the British Electric Foundation whose first spinoff was the group Heaven 17 and their hit (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang. Of the remaining Human League pair, only Philip Oakey was a performer. With determination to complete a European tour, Adrian Wright began learning to play synthesizer and two female singers, Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall, were recruited from among the dancers at Sheffield’s Crazy Daisy disco. The movie started with Mahinder (Naseerudin Shah) getting down at the railway-station and going into a waiting room just as it starts to rain heavily. A woman present there, Sudha (Rekha), tries to hide herself from him. When they do see each other a flashback starts. Mahinder has an accomplished business dealing with photography. He respects his grandfather (Shammi Kapoor) immensely. Incidentally he has been engaged to Sudha for the 5 years but always made some excuses to delay the marriage, however this time his grandfather has fixed the marriage to the first week of the next month. He reveals to Sudha that he has an affair with one of the most radical representations of feminism in a girl called Maya(Anuradha Patel). He returns to tell Maya but Maya has disappeared leaving him poems (which she usually does). Woman’s Variation This is the surviving music from the ballet “Horoscope” by British composer Constant Lambert (1905-1951). Lambert was a child prodigy who began composing orchestral music at age 13. By age 20, Sergei Diaghilev commissioned Lambert to write a ballet (Romeo and Juliet) for the famous Ballets Rousses. Lambert was highly interested in jazz and African American music, and he intended his cantata “The Rio Grande” – probably his most famous composition – to feature a black choir. He became a successful conductor with the Vic-Wells ballet (later the Royal Ballet). After the popular failure of his major choral work “Summer’s Last Will and Testament” (after the play of the same name by Thomas Nashe), Lambert decided that he had failed as a composer, and he concentrated almost exclusively on conducting for the last 14 years of his life. He was a central figure in the intellectual circle of Sacheverell Sitwell and Anthony Powell, who probably modeled the character Hugh Moreland in “A Dance to the Music of Time” after Lambert. An alchoholic, he passed away at age 45 from diabetes and pneumonia. The ballet “Horoscope”, choreographed by Frederick Ashton, is based on astrological themes (like Gustav Holst’s The Planets).
